D-limonene
also known as limonene, is found in citrus fruits, vegetables, meats, and various plants. It is a monocyclic monoterpene and has a relatively high content in citrus fruits (especially their peels), essential oils of spices, and herbs.
Chinese name: D-Limonene
Alternative name: Zhu Xi
Appearance: Colorless or pale yellow transparent liquid
Aroma: It has a fresh orange aroma and a lemon-like scent
Preparation method: Distillation or cold pressing
Extraction parts: Mainly derived from the peels of citrus fruits or commonly found in essential oils of plants such as lemons and lemongrass
Fields and Applications
1. Food
In 1994, D-limonene was recognized as GRAS(Generally Recognized as Safe) by the American Association of Food Flavor and Extract Manufacturers and was approved by the FDA for use in food. Since then, it has been widely applied in food flavorings. As a natural flavoring and antioxidant, it is widely added to beverages, candies, pastries and other foods, which can not only enhance the aroma of food but also extend its shelf life.
2. Cleaning
With the increasing demand for environmental protection, D-limonene began to be used as a green solvent to replace traditional cleaning agents containing kerosene and gasoline at the end of the 20th century. It was widely applied in fields such as mechanical processing, aviation component cleaning, and household cleaning agents. Due to its strong decontamination ability and green, pollution-free nature, the cleaning agents made from it are also known as “all-purpose cleaning agents”
Daily usage
1. Home cleaning
For sticker residues, tape marks, etc., directly apply a small amount of high-concentration D-limonene (such as natural citrus essential oil), let it stand for a moment, and then wipe it with a scraper or cloth. This can easily dissolve the glue and avoid scratching the surface of the object (suitable for materials such as glass, plastic, and metal. It is recommended to test compatibility in a hidden place before use).
2. Natural fragrance
D-limonene is the main component of citrus scents. You can add 1-2 drops of essential oils containing it (such as sweet orange essential oil or lemon essential oil) to an aroma diffuser, or mix it with a base oil (such as olive oil) and apply it to your wrists or behind your ears as a natural perfume. The refreshing scent can relieve fatigue.
